Tu B'Shevat 2011

On Sunday, January 23, the 250+ students at the Columbia Jewish Community School were treated to a series of special presentations by members of the Columbia Jewish Congregation's "Green Team." The presentations were designed to teach various aspects of Tu B'Shevat, the Jewish new year celebration for trees, and general environmental awareness. They included stations on The Seven Species, Bees, Trees & Pollination, Climate Change, Water Treatment, Home Gardening, and Energy Conservation. Many included hands-on opportunities. For example, at one station, students were able to plant their own parsley or cilantro seeds, that in a few months will grow into greens that can be used as karpas at their family seder. At another, they could see and even sample fruits from Israel. And at another, they simulated the elaborate dance movements that bees use to communicate with one another. The heightened levels of engagement afforded by the experiential learning methods employed was a big hit; students, parents and teachers alike expressed positive sentiment about how much they enjoyed the activities.
