SUMMARY:History of Jews in Florida
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an exhilarating and surprising overview&nbsp\;of the hist
ory of Jews in Florida.\nPresented by Marcia Jo Zerivitz\, the Founding Ex
ecutive Director&nbsp\;of the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU\n\nThis history
of the Jews of Florida from colonial times to the present is a sweeping t
apestry of voices spanning centuries. Despite not being officially allowed
to live in Florida until 1763\, Jewish immigrants escaping expulsions and
exclusions were among the earliest settlers. They have been integral to e
very area of Florida’s growth\, from tilling the land and developing ear
ly communities to boosting tourism and ultimately pushing mankind into spa
 ce.\n\nThe Sunshine State’s Jews\, working for common good\, have been O
 lympians\, Nobel Prize winners\, computer pioneers\, educators\, politicia
ns\, leaders in business and the arts and more\, while maintaining their h
eritage to help ensure Jewish continuity for future generations. Today\, F
lorida has the third largest population in the nation and the third larges
t Jewish community.\n\nPlease register in advance to receive Zoom link.\n\

SUMMARY:Commemorate Tisha B'Av
DESCRIPTION:\n\nTisha B’Av \, the ninth day of the Jewish month of Av\, m
arks the destruction of the First and Second Temples in 586 BCE and 70 CE\
, and the subsequent exile of the\nJewish people. It’s a day of fasting
and mourning\, and has become a time to remember other great calamities th
at have befallen the Jewish people\, The&nbsp\; Book of Lamentations \, (E
icha) which is read on&nbsp\; Tisha B’Av \, recounts the devastation wro
ught with the destruction of&nbsp\; Jerusalem &nbsp\;by Babylonia. While i
t is a day of mourning\, it is also a day to confront the dual challenges
of hate and Antisemitism we face as 21th century Jews.\n\nWe will begin wi
th a short service and the recitation of the Book of Lamentations. This wi
ll be followed with a discussion of the challenges Jews face confronting a
 nti-\nSemitism and hate.
