JOB DESCRIPTION                   Columbia Jewish Congregation (CJC) Office Assistant
$20 per hour, part-time  8-10 hours per week

The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented go-getter who takes initiative to seek out projects and uses time effectively. This person will work as part of a team and will play an important role, both behind-the-scenes and in-person, to ensure that our congregation is functioning efficiently. The ideal candidate will understand that they are representing the congregation and our values and will conduct themselves accordingly. 

General Function:

Under the direction of the CJC Executive Director, the Office Assistant responsibilities include:

  • Greeting visitors
  • Answering general questions about CJC/B’Yachad: Oakland Mills Jewish School via phone and email
  • Providing administrative support to committee-led programs and clergy-led services as assigned
  • Assisting/monitoring program/event registration
  • Assisting with referrals of Tzedakah (emergency financial assistance) calls 

Event Planning and Management

  • Prepare the Shabbat cart for Shabbat evening and Saturday morning services. 
  • Coordinate the logistics and implementation of holiday services and other events in conjunction with relevant CJC committees, with support from the Executive Director and clergy
  • Provide on-site High Holy Day support

Office Administration

  • Assist with accounts receivable processing
  • Provide clerical support to the Rabbi and Cantor as needed
  • Assist Executive Director with CJC-related room reservations/cancellations at Oakland Mills Interfaith Center (OMI) 
  • Provide Executive Director vacation coverage of essential tasks, including Shabbat shopping
  • Provide administrative support to B’Yachad: OMJS, as needed, including monthly payroll
  • Ensure that the synagogue office space (main entrance, library, kitchen) is kept neat and presentable

Marketing and Communications

  • Prepare and send weekly Yahrzeit (anniversary of death) notices 
  • Prepare weekly Yahrzeit List for services
  • Prepare and send donation thank yous and acknowledgements
  • Prepare Announcements for Shabbat
  • Maintain Mi Shebeirach (Prayers for Healing) List

Calendaring

  • Maintenance and submission of events to the following community calendars:
  • Jewish Federation of Howard County 
  • Columbia Patch
  • Baltimore Jewish Times
  • JMore Magazine

Other tasks as assigned.
