Tisha B’Av , the ninth day of the Jewish month of Av, marks the destruction of the First and Second Temples in 586 BCE and 70 CE, and the subsequent exile of the
Jewish people. It’s a day of fasting and mourning, and has become a time to remember other great calamities that have befallen the Jewish people, The Book of Lamentations , (Eicha) which is read on Tisha B’Av , recounts the devastation wrought with the destruction of Jerusalem by Babylonia. While it is a day of mourning, it is also a day to confront the dual challenges of hate and Antisemitism we face as 21th century Jews.
We will begin with a short service and the recitation of the Book of Lamentations. This will be followed with a discussion of the challenges Jews face confronting anti-
Semitism and hate.
